Our biggest update yet

Shinigami.

· Released

A new island of shrines and cherry blossom.
A quest, a katana and an underworld below.

Take the dragon ship from Port Sarim. Help the shrine keeper, earn the Hannya mask, try five new ways to train and pick a noble's pocket. Then go down into Yomi and face Akaoni, the Red Demon.

Start the journey
An adventurer in a crimson Hannya mask stands beneath a red torii between glowing stone lanterns on Shinigami
The torii at Shinigami's pier, with the Hannya mask and Shinigami katana worn.

1Getting there

Board the dragon ship at Port Sarim.

Captain Ryujin waits on the shore at Port Sarim, beside his red-sailed dragon ship. The crossing costs 200 coins each way, and a captain waits on the island's pier to sail you home.

2The island

A village under the cherry blossom.

Shinigami's village climbs from the pier to the shrine on the hill. Villagers walk the lanes, fishermen work the beach, monks keep the shrine and samurai guard the torii.

ChiyoThe tea house

A cup of tea, bread and cake, plus Sencha, Matcha and Gyokuro for 60, 160 and 240 coins. Brewing your own is cheaper.

KenjiThe general store

Pots, buckets, a tinderbox, hammer, small net, chisel, knife, rope, logs and vegballs. The island's bank chest is in his store.

Old ToshiroThe fishmonger

Nets, rods, bait and feathers on the pier. He buys koi for 30 coins and golden koi for 50,000.

HarutoThe swordsmith

Folds tamahagane at his anvil, buys folded bars for 250 coins and forges the katana.

SayuriThe shrine keeper

Sells cherry incense for 500 coins. She also has a problem only you can solve.

TobiThe runner

Keeps count at the end of the Shinobi Run, the island's Agility course.

3Quest

A name keeps vanishing from the ledger of the dead.

Sayuri, the shrine keeper, keeps a ledger of the dead. One name will not stay written: Kagetora, a master swordsmith bound to the blade he never finished. Help her set it right in The Shinigami's Ledger.

Before you begin

Talk to Sayuri at the shrine. This is a members quest with no skill requirements.

Folded tamahagane comes from the island's own steel (step 5), and oni horns come from the oni of Yomi and from Akaoni (steps 7 and 8).

Its swing leaves its own steel-and-blossom trail, and its active, Double Strike, lands your next swing as normal and follows it a moment later with a second cut for half of what that second swing rolls. It works only against monsters and recharges in 60 seconds.

Five ways to train on the island.

Shinigami has its own Agility course, a new way to make steel, a tea ceremony, koi to net and a shrine that rewards your offerings.

Your experience rate applies on top of the experience shown here.

Tobi's course starts on the pier posts and runs round the island: the pier posts, the stepping stones across the koi pond, a bamboo beam, a rope swing, the cliff ledge and the graveyard wall.

6Thieving

Pick a noble's pocket, if you dare.

A walled estate stands on an islet off the island's western cliffs, over a plank bridge past the tea house. Its nobles are a new level 85 Thieving target, and their samurai are watching.

8Boss

Akaoni, the Red Demon of Yomi.

Behind a paper seal at the end of Yomi's deepest cave waits Akaoni. It's a public boss: there's no fee, anyone can walk in, and everyone who helps gets their own loot.

Akaoni in its crimson mask at the paper seal of its ash-floored lair, with spirit lanterns and taiko drums

The crimson mask: a Frenzy, a Kanabo Quake line, and the Ledger writing a name. View as GIF

Akaoni keeps RSC's three-round rule, just like Vharok and the Blood Abbot. Once you're in melee with it, it won't start a Quake or a mask attack until you've traded three hits each, the same three rounds you wait before you can retreat. It won't write your name before then either. A fresh Akaoni waits for the first blow before it starts any of this.

  1. Kanabo Quake. Akaoni raises its club and a line of the floor lights up. A moment later it cracks. Step one tile sideways.
  2. Crimson mask, from full health to 66%. A melee frenzy. When it whirls its club, step out of reach.
  3. Jade mask, from 66% to 33%. Poison breath fills a cone in front of it, so stand behind or beside it. Jade shards fly at anyone not in melee and burst onto whoever stands next to the target. Pray Protect from Missiles and spread out.
  4. Black mask, from 33% to the end. Only magic wounds it. Its curse drains 10 Prayer from everyone in the lair, or deals 8 damage if you have none left.
  5. The Shinigami's Ledger. Akaoni writes one player's name. That player can't attack and must touch a lit spirit lantern before time runs out, or take a heavy hit. Each lantern works once, then goes dark until all four relight.
  6. Taiko drummers. Two drummers speed up Akaoni's attacks and the Ledger while they play. Silence them, but they come back.
  7. No hiding. Below 10% health Akaoni enrages, and its attacks and the Ledger come faster still. If it can't reach you, it leaps to you.

Everyone who deals at least a tenth of the damage, and is still fighting when Akaoni falls, gets their own pile where it drops: an oni horn, a tamahagane bloom and one roll on its loot table. Hits on the drummers count toward your tenth, and up to ten players can qualify. Your pile is yours alone for about a minute.

Each kill also rolls once for a unique. It goes to one of the players who helped, and the more damage you dealt, the likelier it's you.

You arrive just outside each guild's door, so the guild's own requirements still apply. The necklace's name shows its charges, and at no charges it becomes an uncharged necklace again, ready to recharge. The totem charges every necklace you carry at once, and you'll need the Legends Quest to reach it.

Eternal Dragon Amulet

A purple Eternal Dragon Amulet

The Eternal Dragon Amulet now shines purple when worn, with a new icon to match. Rub it and a purple dragon carries you away.

Items for donated events

Donated events can now be played for items too. While a donated event's signups are open, use any tradeable item that alchs for more than 50,000 coins, or any holiday rare such as a party hat, on the Edgeville donation box to add it to the prize pool. The winners take it. If the event doesn't finish, it goes back to you.

  • Coins still start the event. Items join its pool while signups are open.
  • Holiday rares such as party hats and Christmas crackers count, even though they alch for a coin or two.
  • Stacks split evenly between the winners, and single items are dealt out in turn.
  • Each event takes up to 20 donations, and up to 5 from any one player.
  • Touch the box during signups, or type ::event pool, to see what's in the pool.

Your interface

  • Collection Log on Android. It now scrolls with a swipe.
  • Merit stars. Community merit stars no longer vanish until you relog.
  • Auction House. Listings can now be priced up to 2,147,483,647 coins.
  • Patch Notes and Slayer on Android. Both windows now scroll with a swipe too.

Events and loot

  • Void Rush. If one wave takes every remaining player, nobody wins and the prize stays in reserve. A shared second place earns the attendance shard only.
  • Dragon and Event Chests. Rewards now join a matching stack in your inventory. Bank and withdraw any old split stacks to join them.
  • Drops page. The website's Drops page now matches the game's own tables. Chaos druids drop the unholy symbol mould only once you've finished the Observatory Quest, and the page now says so.

Skills and combat

  • Routine messages. Spinning, shearing sheep, and picking flax, grain, potatoes, bananas and pineapples, now respect Filter routine skilling messages.
  • Magic while ranging. Casting a spell while you're ranging now tells you why it didn't cast.
  • Slayer Chest. It takes 3 seconds per key instead of 6, and any number of players can open it at once.
  • Scythe. It's one-handed now, so you can wield it with a shield.
  • Furnace Firemaking. A failed log is tried again instead of ending the batch early, so one click burns every log you carry.
  • Blocked teleports. If an item teleport is blocked, you stay where you were and lose nothing. There's no false arrival message, the Skull mask keeps your plague sample, the Disk of Returning isn't used up, and amulets, capes and the skills necklace keep their charges.
